Explanation of the project
We used the hardware Catia V5 to model the SketchChair by Greg Saul (group of 2 students). Then we studied this model by using the hardware Abaqus. The goal was to define the best material and dimensions for the chair.

To begin the project, we started with modelling the StechChair from Greg Saul with the hardware Catia V5 by using Generative Shape Design.

Then we used the model on the hardware Abaqus to realize a mechanical study of the chair with 3 different materials: wood, card board and plastic PC. We also used 3 different thickness for the shelves of the chair (3.2 and 6 mm for the wood; 3, 5 and 10 mm for the card board; and 2, 3 and 5 mm for plastic PC).

And to finish, we applied 2 different kind of force on the chair. The first one was applied on the seat of the chair, to simulate someone sitting on the chair (we used the weight of a men from the 95th percentile to be sure the chair would resist to everybody and we applied a safety factor of 1.33).

The second force was applied on the chair back. This case is less current, but we wanted the chair to resist to a force apllied on this part because we considered it is a case that could happen.

Thanks to this study, we were able to say that the best thickness for wood was 3 mm, for plastic it was 2 mm and for card board it was 5 mm.

Then, we were able to define the price of the chair, depending on the material used (we did not considered logistic and manafacturing, just the price of the material). It was 11.6€ for plastic, 2.86€ for wood and 0.6€ for card board.

We decided that card board was the best material for this chair.

This project was very useful, because I learnt how to use the hardware Abaqus and how to realize a mechanical study.
